Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of nutrition issues do you commonly work with? A wide range of issues are amenable to coaching - common presentations are: Healthy eating basics – what is in your fridge and store cupboard? Do you use your freezer? What are your cooking skills? How do you shop? Sometimes people overlook these basics when trying to eat well. Self-care – there is a lot about self-care in the media, and my experience is that there is a greater need to walk the walk. Often overwhelm and reactive self-indulgence get confused with self-care. This is the classic “because I am worth it” self-talk that soothes but ignores the underlying issue. Knowing what to eat in the noisy and conflicting world of social media and nutrition – taking a look at what and how you eat with some idea of your background, symptom picture and ideals to give you some guidance as to what steps to take. Wanting to improve the quality of your diet – you may want to reduce sugar intake, give up certain foods or try a particular dietary approach. We can appraise how realistic this is for your current lifestyle and capacity. There may be steps that need to be taken before launching into something new. There might just be a couple of tweaks to ensure that nutritional balance is maintained. Assistance with vegetarian or vegan eating – cutting out major food groups is not something to be done casually. How do you ensure that you are meeting your nutritional needs within your time and money budget as well as your cooking skills. Digestive disorders and digestive wellness - Gut Health is central to Good Health. How efficient is your digestion? Do you have symptoms of heartburn, bloating, sluggish digestion, pain, constipation, diarrhoea? Coaching is usually paired with visceral osteopathy for improving your gut function. Weight issues – I work with long-term weight issues that have been a source of difficulty and repeated cycles of failure more than short-term weight goals. I can also work with those who wish to gain weight. Appetite Sensitivity Training – often when there is a history of difficulty around food intake such as chronic dieting, we can dysregulate our system of metabolic regulation. Getting that back involves taking various steps to get our gut, brain, liver, blood sugar regulation and appetite signals back on track. It is not uncommon for these natural signals to have become over-ridden with well-intentioned diets and eating plans that we do not even know how to tune into these signals anymore. Visceral osteopathy is also useful (though not essential) with this regard. Disordered eating – I am not qualified to take on clients with active eating disorders, and should I suspect that this may be part of your presentation then I will refer you on to professionals who have the level of training to manage this particular issue. However, many of us sit in the grey area where there is a struggle to get basics right. There are many strategies to finally step off the endless repetitive cycle of diminishing returns that so many dietary attempts lead into.

What kind of chronic problems do you work with? Stress management – stress can show up in so many ways that often appear superficially to be unconnected to the source of stress. Physical symptoms are frequently an indication of poorly managed stressors that may be completely unconscious. Fatigue and burnout – this is a broad area that may well need some screening for nutritional deficiencies, as well as stressors, executive function deficits and emotional issues. This is unlikely to be a straightforward path to recovery and may take some trial and error as well as additional professional help. However, some basic orientation, understanding and awareness of your Health Lifeline, Executive function and Self-care capacity provide an excellent foundational platform. Chronic Pain – pain that lasts over an extended period of time is indicative of adaptive changes in your neurological and inflammatory immune system. Lifestyle habits such as diet, movement, sleep and stress management as well as emotional regulation can significantly improve the levels of pain experienced. Medically unexplained symptoms – these are a range of symptoms that can be very debilitating but for which there does not seem to be a clear answer. The good news is that people with these symptoms have often had the necessary tests to exclude pathology. The other good news is that taking a multi-system approach can often get to the bottom of the matter. Common symptoms include pains in the muscles or joints, back pain, headaches, fatigue, chest pain, heart palpitations, digestive symptoms.

How can you help with Women's Health? Postnatal Wellness – Mums tend to go to the bottom of the list of priorities once they have had a baby. It is important to keep yourself well-nourished to manage the marathon that a new baby demands. I help you understand both your body's and your baby's needs and advise in a supportive way that does not add to the weight of care that already exists for new Mums. Mummy MOT is a thorough post- natal check up and I can continue to work with you around core strength, tummy gap closure, scar tissue from tears or surgery and any aches and pains that new motherhood can bring. This can also help you shore up your foundational strength for further pregnancies or future menopause when continence can become an issue. I use the MAPLe system to assist in pelvic floor rehabilitation in the post-natal or perimenopausal period to help with difficult symptoms related to poor function of this important muscle group. Hormones, our superpower and our nemesis! Taking a look through the diet and history to get an idea of where hormone balance can be improved; very often diet and lifestyle advice go a long way. Sometimes I may suggest further testing to clarify hormone levels and your liver’s ability to detoxify them.

How do I know if you are right for me? This cannot necessarily be obvious immediately as there are so many factors involved. I offer a free 20 minute discovery call to help us get a sense of each other. If I do not think I am the right fit I will be clear and offer options that you might explore instead. There are many stages to lasting change and I may just be a short chapter on your journey. It may be that you need to get a sense of how I work before making a big commitment. This is entirely understandable, and I will not be pressurising you to stay with me beyond what is reasonable and affordable for you. Sometimes a real commitment is key to change, and you may have to take the plunge with a more protracted program. I would not advise you to do this before seeing me for a minimum of a 90 minute consultation.
